Work integrated learning
University West is Sweden’s leading university in work integrated learning (WIL). We were tasked with the development of WIL by the Swedish government 15+ years ago and continue to lead the field today. This approach focuses on problem-based learning for industry and gives you access to real projects from partner companies and research centres.
Your courses and instructors are based in the active research of Production Technology West (PTW), internationally recognised for work in production systems and processes in the manufacturing industry.
We built your specialisation in AI and automation in close collaboration with corporate partners, who will provide you with insight and project work throughout your studies. Your training concludes with a master’s thesis you design and complete in collaboration with a company or within the PTW research group.
A growing field for innovators
Do you have an innovative mind-set? Get into the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the ground floor: AI is in the start-up phase of implementation in industry. As a graduate of this programme, you will be a key player in introducing new ways to deploy AI in industry.
Advanced laboratories
During your studies you will have access to advanced laboratory equipment in our newly built automation lab comprising industrial robots, mobile robots, machine vison and machine learning equipment etc.

A strong job market
The manufacturing industry is facing a technological shift where sustainable, flexible and smart solutions are necessary to assure the competitiveness of companies. The fourth industrial revolution, Industry 4.0, is at the beginning of implementation within the manufacturing industry. These technologies require new competences within AI, sensor technology, data processing, advanced automation and more.
The market for smart manufacturing is expecting an annual growth of 12.4 % from 2020 to 2025. This indicates a strong market for engineers within the field of AI, automation and smart manufacturing, as the development of AI solutions is key for implementing smart manufacturing.
The job market for production technology engineers is extremely good. There are both Swedish and global initiatives to support the development of AI solutions, since they are strategically important to developing the digital future. As a specialist in this rapidly expanding field, you will have many options: advanced research in academia or a career in industry, both in Sweden and abroad.
Specialised and personal
University West offers an intimate campus environment without the usual barriers between academic staff and students. Here, your professors are easily accessible to answer questions, hold discussions and provide individual feedback. The teacher-to-student ratio is higher than at most comparable programmes at other universities.
While large universities have several focus areas, University West’s small size and high quality allow us to focus on and dedicate resources to a few prioritised/selected areas, such as production technology and processes. This ensures a high-quality programme as well as a warm and friendly atmosphere.
International environment
Students from around the globe come together to create a unique and international environment. Your programme is fully taught in English, and you will study together with students from Sweden as well as international students from countries in Asia, Europe, Africa and North and South America.
Most of your instructors also have international experience in both research and education. This will enhance your cultural experience and English-language proficiency.
