Work Integrated Learning
University West is Sweden’s leading university in work integrated learning (WIL). We were tasked with the development of WIL by the Swedish government 15+ years ago and continue to lead the field today. WIL allows you to reflect and put your knowledge and skills into practice within real-world contexts.
We built your programme in close collaboration with public, private and non-profit partners. The curriculum is designed for action. It will help you understand theories, evaluate plans and work towards global goals for sustainable development within your areas of interest.
Additionally, you may choose to apply for an internship in the third semester of your programme, and your studies conclude with a master’s thesis you design in collaboration with your supervisor. It will address real issues in sustainable development currently faced by an organisation or group.
Expertise in sustainable development
One of University West's primary long-term goals is to support sustainable development in all activities and education. The School of Business, Economics and IT, which delivers your programme, has many years of expertise in a number of areas that are closely related to sustainable development, including:
- Sustainable community building
- Citizenship and democracy studies
- Environmental studies
- Macroeconomics and microeconomics
- IT and digitalisation
- Societal development
- Leadership studies
Work and workplace learning
As a student in this programme, you’ll join a thriving community of professors, researchers and doctoral candidates. Your courses and instructors are based in the active research in WIL. There are many companies and other organisations linked to our research projects that includes researchers and staff from the entire university. As a student, you will have the opportunity to be part of cutting-edge research.
Diverse professional applications
Your peers will come from a wide range of backgrounds, academically, professionally and culturally. In order to achieve results, it is key that people such as engineers, economists, system developers, surveyors, teachers and nurses develop an ability to communicate and lead development work both within and between organisations and society.
The collaborative and development skills you build in this programme will enable you to contribute to concrete solutions for complex sustainability issues in a wide range of sectors.
International internship or study abroad
Choose an internship or study abroad in the third semester of your programme. Specialised and personal, University West offers an intimate campus environment without the usual barriers between academic staff and students. Here, your professors are easily accessible to answer questions and hold discussions.
While large universities have several focus areas, University West’s small size and high quality allow us to focus on and dedicate resources to a few prioritised/selected areas. This ensures a high-quality programme as well as a warm and friendly atmosphere.
Students from around the globe come together in your programme to create a unique and international environment. The programme is fully taught in English, and you will collaborate with students from Sweden as well as international students.
Many of your instructors also have international experience in both research and education. This will enhance your cultural experience and English-language proficiency.
A strong job market
There is a high demand for leaders with these new skills in both the public and private sectors. Work and research in social, ecological and economic sustainability can have many practical applications, including:
- Organisation, work and leadership
- Business development
- Socioeconomic sustainable development
- Income disparities
- Equality and justice
- Democracy and diversity
- Production and consumption
- Political governance
