Shebin's Road to Volvo Cars
Shebin John pursued a Master’s in Manufacturing Engineering at University West, drawn by the strong industry connections and expertise in advanced techniques. Today, he is a process engineer at Volvo Cars, overseeing the production of battery trays for electric vehicles.
Shebin John from India pursued a Master’s in Manufacturing Engineering at University West. His choice was influenced by the university's strong industry connections and its expertise in advanced engineering techniques such as friction stir welding, thermal spray, welding of super alloys, and additive manufacturing."University West excels among other renowned institutions," Shebin states.
With several years of industry experience, Shebin sought to enhance his knowledge in manufacturing, particularly in welding engineering.
"I had been working in the industry for a few years and felt the need to sharpen my knowledge," he explains.
Thoughts about Sweden and University West
Shebin describes the campus atmosphere as inclusive, with well-equipped classrooms and labs. His experience in Sweden in general, was largely positive, describing the country as "a well-oiled machine" where everything is organized and standardized.
However, he had some concerns about housing before arriving. Since University West helps provide accommodation for all international students this did not become an issue.
Shebin did not experience much culture shock, thanks to his prior research into Swedish culture and lifestyle. Reflecting on his time in Sweden, Shebin expresses his admiration for the Swedish concept of 'Lagom,' which means 'just the right amount.'
"It's a sweet spot where everything is balanced—not too much, not too little, but just enough to keep things in harmony," he concludes.
In his free time, he enjoyed cycling, taking advantage of Sweden's bicycle-friendly environment and numerous trails.
"I absolutely love it," he says.
Carreer and advice
Currently, Shebin works as a process engineer at Volvo Cars, overseeing the production of battery trays for electric vehicles. His future goal is to become a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in welding, a goal he is confident he will achieve in a few years.
For prospective students, Shebin advises researching the university's strengths and industry connections if they aim to enter the industry, or academic connections if their interest lies in research.
"And, of course, pack a winter jacket," he adds.
