International Welding Engineer (IWE) & International Welding Technologist (IWT)
The program provides professional engineers and technologists with extensive technical expertise in welding coordination. An IWE or IWT diploma enables the holder to take responsibility for advanced welding coordination tasks, while companies strengthen quality assurance and long-term competitiveness.

Target group
The program is aimed at engineers and technologists working in industrial welding environments, in production, design, inspection, or projects involving welded components. A highly relevant program for those who want to develop their knowledge and expertise in welding coordination.
About the program
The studies run over one academic year and are taught in English. You will study alongside students in the Master Program in International Welding Engineering.
The program involves full-time studies, but the structure makes it possible to combine studies with work. In rolling three-week periods, the schedule is as follows:
Weeks 1 and 2: Classes on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at University West’s campus or in lab environments in Trollhättan.
Week 3: No classes.
After that, a new 3-week period begins with the same schedule. And so on.
Attendance is mandatory for lab sessions and for lectures. However, there are some possibilities to take some lectures online.
Theory is combined with practice. Of the program’s total 448 hours, 60 hours are practical lab sessions at the Production Technology Centre and in the lab at Nils Ericson School in Trollhättan.
During the program, you will also meet several industrial companies and learn about their operations through guest lectures and study visits.
The program is led by Paul Kah, Professor of Welding Technology at University West.
Program content

Examination
After each course there will be a writing examination. When all courses and lab sessions are completed, you will also be examined orally organized by the Swedish Welding Commission (does not apply to those who are going to receive an IWT diploma). Once the examination is approved, the Swedish Welding Commission will issue an IWE or IWT diploma, if desired.
Entry requirements for IWE
The entry requirement is the same globally as in Sweden. To qualify as an IWE, you must have completed an engineering degree, any equivalent or higher education before the program. In other words, applicants must have at least a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or a three-year technical degree in a relevant discipline.
Entry requirements for IWT
To qualify as an IWT, you must have completed one of the following degrees:
- Four-year technical upper secondary education or engineer/technician with equivalent older theoretical education (three years or longer).
- A degree from a technical program (one or two years) after completing a science-oriented upper secondary education.
- An IWS diploma plus at least six years of professional experience at a high technical level within eight years of the diploma’s issuance. The entrance test has been removed.
Good mathematical skills are required. Check that you have the following math knowledge.
Fee
The program costs SEK 150,000 + VAT (invoiced at the start of the program) and SEK 7,300 + VAT for examination and diploma issuance.
Start date
The program starts in September 2026.
