AI self-study course

Welcome to University West's self-study course on generative AI for employees!

The self-study course consists of six modules. We recommend taking them in order, but experienced users of generative AI can start right away with Module 2. Each module takes about 1–2 hours to complete.

The course and its modules are mandatory. In order to comply with the requirements of the AI Act, Article 4 on AI literacy, Modules 2 and 3 conclude with knowledge assessments that all employees are required to complete by January 2026.

Workshops will also be offered, where you can discuss and deepen your knowledge together with others. Read more about the AI for all project and what’s happening after you taken the course, in Spring 2026.

1. Getting started

Would you like to get started with generative AI? This module gives you a basic introduction to Copilot, shows you how to write useful prompts, and lets you try out examples that make the tool easier to use in everyday situations.

2. What is AI and generative AI?

In this module, you will receive a basic introduction to what AI and generative AI (GenAI) are and how they work. You will also be introduced to key considerations for adopting a critical approach to AI, with a particular focus on issues such as bias and sustainability.

3. Information security and AI

In this module, you will learn more about the secure management of organisational information, information security, and AI. Based on this, we will also go through user examples using a traffic light model, to help you more easily understand how it relates to your work tasks.

4. A range of AI tools

In this module, you will have the opportunity to explore various generative AI tools that are not included in University West’s standard system support. Here, you can explore a range of available services and gain inspiration for new ways of working.

5. Working life and AI

Working life will change with AI, but exactly how and when is difficult to predict. In this module, we use reports and examples to enable you to reflect on how both organisations and individuals can move forward in an AI landscape.

6. Teaching and AI

In this module, you are introduced to how generative AI affects knowledge, teaching, and assessment. Through videos and short texts, you will gain practical approaches to developing AI-aware course design.
