Switch of Streaming platform
In the autumn of 2025, the streaming platform HV Play will be replaced by Canvas Studio. The decision to switch streaming platforms is based on considerations of cost efficiency and simpler management of media content within the Canvas platform. The plan is for Canvas Studio to be available for use starting in October.
During the month of June, staff who have videos on HV Play will receive a mail with access to a list of their videos where they are to indicate which ones they wish to save. These videos will then be transferred to Canvas Studio during the autumn, while the remaining videos will be deleted.
If you have recently uploaded videos, they will not appear on the list, but all videos uploaded after May 1 will automatically be included in the transfer.
The deadline to indicate which videos you want transferred is August 22.
Q & A
Why aren’t all videos being transferred to Canvas Studio?
We pay for each video that is transferred and need to minimize that cost. At the same time, this allows us to clear out outdated material.
Do I need to reinsert the videos into my Canvas courses?
The videos marked for transfer will automatically be re-linked in the courses.
I use videos that colleagues have shared with me. How can I ensure they’re transferred?
It’s up to your colleague to request that the videos be transferred to Canvas Studio. Once the video is in Canvas Studio, your colleague can share it with you again.
My colleague has left HV, but their videos are still used in courses. What happens to these videos?
The videos will not be transferred. If the video owner gives written permission via email, I can change the ownership of the video.
Will student videos be transferred?
No, but exceptions can be made for spring courses. Please contact me regarding this.
What happens to video links used in other programs, such as Word, PowerPoint, FeedbackFruits, etc.?
These videos will need to be re-linked.
Can I download my videos to my own computer?
Yes, instructions are available here.
Will subtitle files be transferred?
Yes.
Will audio files be transferred?
Yes.
When will HV Play be shut down?
According to current planning, uploading videos to HV Play will no longer be possible starting October 6. HV Play will be shut down at the end of the year.
What happens to videos that are not transferred?
Videos not transferred will be deleted.
Can I delete videos myself?
Yes, but it’s not required before the transition.
What happens to HV Play videos that are not in Canvas courses but on other websites?
These videos will need to be re-linked.
When can I start uploading videos to Canvas Studio?
According to the current plan, teachers will have access to Canvas Studio starting October 1 and can upload videos then.
Are there instructions and guides available for Canvas Studio?
Instructions will be available in the Canvas Guides, and we will also host lunchtime seminars on Canvas Studio during the autumn.
Can you make screen recordings in Canvas Studio?
Yes, you can.
Can you create playlists in Canvas Studio?
No, this is not currently possible, but it is a high priority for development in Canvas Studio.
Good to Know
Videos recorded in Kaltura Capture
Canvas Studio cannot handle videos with dual video streams, which many Kaltura Capture videos have. These will be separated into two individual videos. Contact me if you want to transfer videos recorded with dual streams.
Kaltura Video Quiz
Video quizzes cannot be transferred. Canvas Studio does not support this format.
