Security in Zoom meetings
03 Dec 2025
Recently, unauthorized people have gotten into some Zoom meetings, which has led to disruptions and unsafe situations.
Therefore, there are now recommendations for Zoom meetings that are published openly, for example via the calendar or on hv.se. The recommendations do not apply to meetings where you invite participants directly via Zoom or email and the link is not published openly.
Recommendations for your regular meetings
For in-person meetings that aren't openly published, you can increase security by:
- Require participants to be logged in to Zoom (authentication) to participate.
- Use a passcode to enter the meeting.
- Enable waiting rooms so that you can admit attendees manually.
You can make these settings when you schedule a Zoom meeting in advance. They can be found under "Schedule" on the home tab in Zoom, but not if you start a meeting directly via "New meeting" in the app.
Meetings published openly
When a meeting link is published openly, the meeting should primarily be held as a webinar, if possible. Then only those who present can use a camera and microphone, while the other participants only watch.
If the meeting needs to be a regular meeting where everyone can talk and have a camera on, and the link is still to be published openly, at least the following must be enabled:
- Waiting room
- Requirements for login/authentication in Zoom
If necessary, you can also add a passcode as extra protection.
Tools during the meeting
Once the meeting is up and running, as the host, you can:
- Lock the meeting so that no new participants can join.
- Manage the waiting room and attendee rights via "Host tools/Security" in the meeting window.
There you will also find more security settings that can be used if something unexpected happens during the meeting.
