Record video and audio for teaching
There are many ways to record videos to use as course material in your teaching. The ICT educational developers and media technicians can support you with this.
Plan your recording
There are many ways to create digital course materials. What works best is up to you, who knows your course and your subject best. Regardless of the method, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Clarity and conciseness
Try to be short and concise. Think modularly/heading-wise so that your productions are short and clear. It is better to divide the material into several parts than to try to imitate a 45-minute lecture. Some formats, such as couch conversations between several participants, often work in a slightly longer format, while recorded Powerpoint presentations quickly lose interest if they are too long.
Always prioritize sound
No matter how you record your video, always prioritize the sound. It doesn't matter how interesting your visuals are if you can't hear what's being said. Always use a headset or external microphone when recording..
Use the possibilities of the medium
Try to exploit the potential of the media form. If you have a lot of visual material, a video often works well. The same applies to labs, tests and processes. For theory reviews, an audio recording or voice over for a PowerPoint might work just as well. Try to avoid too much text information in your production as it quickly becomes difficult to read and absorb.
Independent in time and space
If you want to be able to easily reuse your videos, strive to make them independent in time and space. Avoid writing dates and course codes in presentations, do not refer to previous or upcoming videos, and wear seasonally neutral clothing.
Practice again and again
Remember to practice before you start your recording. It's an unusual situation and a lot to keep track of. Also remember that it doesn't matter if you get it wrong on the first try. Pause your work and try again, it's guaranteed to be better the second time. Aim for a quality that is good enough for the purpose of the video and don't spend an unreasonable amount of time on details or strive for complete perfection. If you have followed the advice above about trying to divide your work into smaller parts, it will also be easier to redo.
Record with the support of a media technician
If you want to record a video and get a professional result, the best way to do it is in our large studio together with media technicians. You will be helped by our media technicians with all the technology and recording and you can concentrate on what needs to be said. You can record many different types of videos in the large studio, e.g. sofa conversation, with lightboard or presentation. Read more about how the media technicians can help you.
Record in our self-service studio - H109
On campus there is H109, a studio where you can record yourself. You can record yourself, your screen and with a document camera. Read more about the studio.
Screen recording
A popular way to create educational videos is to record your screen along with your voice. Screen recording is an easy way to make a movie of your Powerpoint. It can also be used to give instructions in software or talk about, for example, text that is displayed on the screen. There are several different ways to make a screen recording:
Record with Powerpoint
A clear advantage of recording in Powerpoint is that you can edit, split and make new versions of your video. Guide for recording in Powerpoint.
Record with Kaltura Capture - a part of HV Play
The advantage of using Kaltura Capture is that the video is uploaded directly to HV Play. Guide for recording in Kaltura Capture.
Recording in Zoom
By starting a meeting without other participants, you can use Zoom for screen recording. Guide for recording in Zoom.
Short videos in Canvas
Canvas includes a media recorder for recording short videos directly in a course. They can be used in posts, discussions, and on pages. Students also have access to the media recorder when writing discussion posts. Guide for recording in Canvas (login required).
Audio recording
Creating audio files today is relatively easy as you can actually do it with your mobile phone or your computer and headset.
Pod in Zoom
By recording a meeting in Zoom where you and a colleague or guest are talking, you can easily make a pod. Instead of using the video recording of the meeting, you use the audio recording that is also created. Guide to recording in Zoom.
Pod studio
If you want to take it a few steps further, maybe it is a podcast together with some colleagues that is the best option for your course. Contact the media technicians for more information.
Publish your video or audio recording
Once your video or audio recording is complete, it needs to be uploaded to a streaming service. University West uses HV Play. After uploading, the video can be published on Canvas or shared in other ways. Read more about how to use HV Play.
