The transition process - decided organisational changes October 8

The majority of the country's higher education institutions have a tough financial situation right now and in the coming years. The government does not prioritize increased resources for the higher education sector. High inflation has resulted in increased salary and operating costs. These are some of the reasons for the strained economic situation in the sector, all over Sweden.

Despite already implemented measures, a budget deficit remains in balance in 2026, which means that more measures need to be implemented and we need to start a transition process. 

We need a balanced economy to be able to continue focusing on our core business - conducting high-quality education and research that benefits both students and the wider world. 

Organisational changes decided 

Below you can find a brief summary (not comprehensive) of the measures decided today within the respective work unit concerned. 

University Administration 

The analysis for the administration shows that staffing needs to be reduced by 13 full-time equivalent. The risk of redundancy affects six of the administration's seven departments and mainly affects tasks related to investigations, validation and business development, finance, communication and HR support, information management and system related work. 

Study and Academic Support, Library and Educational Development 

Decided organisational change means that there is a risk of redundancy regarding 2.7 full-time equivalent with duties in work management and personnel responsibility, coordination for students with disabilities and in media production/media technology. 

School of Business, Economics and IT 

Decided organisational change means that there is a risk of redundancy regarding 15 full-time equivalent with tasks mainly in teaching and research. The decisions concern upcoming changes in the range of programs*, discontinuance of commissioned education for real estate agents as a result of a decision already made, and discontinuance of a number of research, advice and coordination tasks. A further measure is to reduce unplanned time, i.e. working time for which there are no tasks. 

Department of Social and Behavioural Studies 

Decided organisational change means that there is a risk of redundancy regarding 10.3 full-time equivalent with duties mainly in teaching. The decision concerns, for example, the discontinuation of nine independent courses, reduced frequency of certain independent courses and joint reading of parts of the teacher's programmes. A further measure is to reduce unplanned time, i.e. working time for which there are no tasks. 

Department of Health Sciences 

Decided organisational change means that there is a risk of redundancy regarding 1 full-time equivalent related to duties within administrative support. The previously announced lack of funds has been adjusted downwards, among other things, because two employees have resigned. 

Next step - "early" reassignment 

The employer is now investigating the possibility of reassignment before a labor shortage is identified and the priority order, so-called "early" reassignment, for the positions/work tasks that are at risk of redundancy.

*Proposal for discontinuing of:

• Mäklarekonomprogrammet/Broker economists program, Real Estate and Finance,
• Tillämpad samhällsplanering/Bachelor's programme in Applied Societal Planning,
• Lantmätarprogrammet – Samhällsbyggnad och samhällsplanering / Surveying and Land Management Program,
• Magister i internationellt företagande/Master in International Business 
• Magister i finans/Master in Finance.
• Discontinuation of a specialization in Bachelor of Science Programme in Business and Economics. 

Students on ongoing educations of programs above are not affected but can complete their education as planned and the education continues as planned. Only new upcoming program starts will be affected.
