Record Interest in Swedish Language Course – Over 200 International Students Participate
04 Dec 2025
Interest in the Swedish Language Course offered to international programme students at University West has increased significantly. This fall, the course is being offered for the second time, with 208 students enrolled – a fourfold increase compared to last spring.

The course is organized by the Knowledge Association West and aims to strengthen students’ language skills and improve their future opportunities in Sweden.
“When we attract talent to Trollhättan, we want to help increase their chances of staying and becoming part of the community,” says Lena Sjöberg, Pro Vice-Chancellor at University West. “By doing so, we contribute even more to raising the competence level in our region, which we know is needed. The Swedish language can be a key factor.”
One who have participated in the course is Angel Peralta from Peru.
“I wanted to improve the Swedish I already knew,” he says. “The course is perfect to combine with studies, especially if you’re a beginner and want to learn more about both the language and Swedish culture. It’s a great opportunity to start integrating into society in a meaningful way.”
The course is held on campus in four classrooms equipped with modern technology that makes the classes both interactive and accessible for a large student group.
The collaboration between the university and the Knowledge Association West has been crucial in making it possible to offer the course to so many participants. It also serves as a strong example of how joint initiatives can create added value for both students and the region.
“It’s incredibly exciting to offer a tailored Swedish Language Course for international students,” says Johan Ceder, Head of Adult Education and Vocational Training at the Knowledge Association West. “Collaboration, engaged teachers, and enthusiastic students have created a wonderful social and educational environment where the students quickly learn Swedish. It’s a key factor in building connections and getting to know other people and Swedish society.”
In addition to four language teachers from the Knowledge Association West, nine student ambassadors from University West’s teacher education programme support the classes. The combination of experienced pedagogy and student-centered guidance has proven successful.
Planning for the continuation of the course next semester is already underway, with the goal of giving even more international students the opportunity to develop their Swedish skills and lay the foundation for a future in Sweden.
