University West has followed the case of the Swedish-Iranian researcher Ahmadreza Djalali with growing dismay. Djalali is imprisoned in the Evin prison in the Iranian capital Tehran and has been sentenced to death after being accused of espionage.
Several major international organizations, including Scholars at Risk and Amnesty International, have sharply criticized the legal process. The trial of Djalali has been called a sham. He has been subjected to isolation, torture and other violations of his fundamental human rights.
Unfortunately, the Djalali case is not unique. Every day, academics and researchers are exposed to threat or violence. No continent is spared.
As with democracy and human rights, academic freedom is something that must be defended every day. It is under constant attack by authoritarian and reactionary forces. As part of the international academic family, University West has a responsibility to defend academic freedom and stand up against human rights violations.
Together with large parts of the international community, University West therefore demands the immediate and unconditional release of Ahmadreza Djalali.
