This marks a significant milestone in making high-level, globally recognized welding education accessible to both University West students and the broader industry.

“This is highly prestigious because it enables us to provide training that meets international standards established by the International Institute of Welding,” says Professor Paul Kah, Professor of Welding Technology at University West.

Located on Sweden’s west coast, University West is surrounded by major industrial employers such as GKN Aerospace, Volvo Cars and Trucks, ESAB, and Siemens. Many of which have expressed growing interest in accessing advanced welding training in the region.

“This allows us to offer high-level, industry-relevant education right here in western Sweden. Something that, until now, has only been available in Stockholm through KTH and SWERIM,” says Professor Kah.

Offering the program locally also helps reduce travel costs for companies in the region.

Integrated into a New Master’s Program – Also Available to Industry

The IWE qualification will be integrated into a new one-year Master’s program in International Welding Engineering, set to launch in September 2026. In addition, the program will be offered as commissioned training for companies, giving professionals the opportunity to take individual courses based on the international IWE curriculum. This structure promotes knowledge exchange between students and industry professionals.

“Many students may never have had the opportunity to engage with industry professionals before. Sharing a classroom and working in groups with them gives students valuable insight into real-world industrial practices,” says Kah. “It’s a win-win. Students learn from industry experience, and companies gain fresh perspectives from students.”

Global Opportunities, Local Access

“This certification is a mark of quality,” says Kah. “It sends a clear message to both students and employers that University West offers training that meets international standards and industry demands.”

The IWE certification is recognized in over 50 countries, opening doors for graduates both in Sweden and abroad.

“A graduate of this program will be qualified to work in any of those 50 countries,” Kah adds.

The certification is also a key requirement for serving as a responsible welding coordinator, as defined by ISO EN 14731.
