Research in the area is conducted in close collaboration with public and private actors, including healthcare organisations, municipalities, and industry partners. Rather than studying challenges from a distance, DIS engages with real-world problems as they unfold in practice, developing new knowledge, perspectives, and solutions together with the organisations and communities concerned. Collaborative funding models and joint projects with external partners form an integral part of the area's research strategy.

The work spans a broad range of interconnected themes, including digital transformation and organisational development, leadership and collaboration, psychosocial health, safety and wellbeing, knowledge and competence development, learning and education, the effects of digitalisation on society, organisations and individuals, capacity planning and sustainability in health and care systems, and community planning for the wellbeing of citizens, including housing and quality of life for older adults.

Through its research, education, and collaborative projects, DIS aims to develop new perspectives and forms of cross-boundary applied research that contribute to a health-promoting and socially sustainable societal development. The area seeks to strengthen society, its organisations, and its citizens in navigating a future where digital solutions are increasingly integrated into everyday life and work. In doing so, DIS contributes to sustainable development locally, nationally, and internationally. Research within DIS contributes to the international research community through publications and collaborations. This research area is led by professor Ann Svensson.
