Can parents and schools be protective mechanisms to prevent social media use from becoming a health problem?
Young people engage in social media every day, and those between the ages of 17-18 in Sweden have screen time for up to seven hours a day, not including the time they use screens at school. Social media refers to various platforms where one can communicate both verbally and visually with others.
Research shows complex relationships between social media use and young people’s health, as there can be various factors affecting health besides social media. For example, we know from previous studies that factors such as upbringing conditions, home environment, leisure time, socioeconomic conditions, and parents also affect young people’s health. Following the same young people’s social media use over time, as well as the parent-child relationship and school satisfaction, we can gain more knowledge about the relationships between different factors. Additionally, we can investigate whether parents and school satisfaction constitute risk or protective factors in relation to social media use
