I conduct research on work-integrated language learning. My doctoral thesis, Work-Integrated Language Learning, examines so-called combination programmes within adult education (komvux), in which migrants study Swedish alongside vocational training in an integrated programme. Boundary crossing between the Swedish language subject, the vocational subject, and workplace practice appears to be crucial in enabling learners to develop opportunities for learning, communication, and interaction.
My current research project, Industrial Work-Integrated Language Learning (I-WILL), focuses on how language proficiency and communication, in combination with new technologies, can be developed directly in the workplace. The overarching aim is to strengthen employees’ linguistic competence and inclusion, as well as to enhance understanding of work-related health, the work environment, and safety, while also contributing to organisational development within the food processing industry.
How my research can make a difference
My research concerns opportunities for language development among migrants, both within educational programmes linked to the labour market and through workplace-based initiatives aimed at strengthening employees’ linguistic competence and inclusion. In a context characterised by increasingly demanding and restrictive migration policies, where language proficiency and labour market integration constitute central conditions for inclusion and citizenship, this is of particular importance.
Teaching/supervision
I teach in the subject teacher education programme and within the Lärarlyftet initiative, in courses focusing on literacy development and language- and knowledge-developing approaches in Swedish as a second language. At doctoral level, I teach the course Academic Writing, and I also teach on the master’s programmes in work-integrated learning. I also supervise degree projects within teacher education programmes.
