Per Nylén is leader of the research team Production Technology West at University West. His research field is thermal spraying, a method used for the surface coating of metals with ceramic or metallic materials. The purpose of the coating is to protect against high temperatures, corrosion, wear etc. A large number of components for aeroplane engines are coated using thermal spraying. When it is possible to allow higher temperatures in the aeroplane engine, emissions and fuel consumption can be decreased. The technology is also used for gas turbines in electric plants.
