Information about the Data Breach Canvas

The supplier of Canvas, Instructure, has informed its customers of a security incident. According to the supplier, there is a risk that personal data may have been disclosed in connection with the incident. Instructure confirmed on 7 May that University West is one of the affected higher education institutions.

According to Instructure, the intrusion has been stopped and they are currently investigating which data may have been exposed.
The security incident affects several higher education institutions in Sweden as well as internationally.

Approximately 9,000 institutions and 278 million users worldwide are affected.

Yes. According to Instructure, the intrusion has been stopped and you can use Canvas as usual.

Data that may have been disclosed from Canvas includes:
Names
Email addresses
Student ID numbers
Chats between users

At present, there is no information indicating that files or Canvas passwords have been compromised.

We are coordinating our work across IT security, information security, data protection and communications, and are closely monitoring the situation.

The University’s IT systems continue to maintain a high level of security, supported by several recently implemented security-enhancing measures.

Communication is ongoing.

The University has:

• Reported a potential personal data incident to the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY)
• Maintained ongoing contact with other Swedish higher education institutions that also use Canvas
• Implemented necessary security-enhancing measures

• At present, the greatest assessed risk is phishing attempts, such as suspicious emails or login requests.
• Do not click on links from unknown senders.
• Be cautious about the information you share in personal messages in Canvas.
