Information for those who have felt/been subjected to harassment

  • If possible, be assertive and tell the person who is harassing you in no uncertain terms that their behaviour is not appreciated and that you want it to stop. Try to be as concrete as possible about which behaviour/language you experience as discriminatory/abusive.
  • Document what happened. Note the time, date, any witnesses, what happened and what the person who harassed you said and/or did, your reaction, and feelings (what, where, when, and how).
  • For students: The recommendation is that you speak with someone who is in a leadership position, such as a programme/course coordinator or the section head (for the programme you are on) and request a private conversation. If the alleged discrimination has to do with the relation between you and your course or programme coordinator, the problem needs to be raised at a higher level, where the person in a superior leadership position takes over responsibility for investigating and handling the situation.
  • Take advantage of offers to help and support you process the situation if such is deemed important. Support can be provided through the occupational health services (employee) and through student health services (student).
