Brno, Beers, and Beyond: Tilde Staff's Exchange Experience
Tilde Staff, is currently studying the International Programme in Politics and Economics (IPPE) at University West. She has been on an exchange semester at Masaryk University in Brno, the second-largest city in Czech Republic.

Describing her experience abroad as "fantastic," Tilde shares that the journey has been transformative and filled with eye-opening moments. "I have met so many great people and made so many memories that I will appreciate for the rest of my life," she says.
Reflecting on her best memory, Tilde finds it hard to choose, but highlights the many trips across Europe. Czech Republic being centrally located allowed for visits to Krakow, Vienna, Bratislava, and Prague.
One of the best nights of my life is when we went to Vienna. We first went to one of the many art museums and then to a Christmas market. Where we drank a lot of Glühwein. We finished the night with a concert, which was in German and I don’t speak a word of German, haha, but the vibe was immaculate.”
Unexpected Surprises and Challenges
Tilde's biggest surprise in the Brno was the locals' low proficiency in English, emphasizing the value of learning a few Czech words to get around. Also, the hilly terrain of Brno caught her off guard, leading to unexpected calf-muscle gains.
And adapting to a new school and moving to a foreign country presented some challenges. The greatest of which being adapting to the intensive studying system.
“There is always something to do, something that needs to be read or projects that needs to be done. But I found a routine.”
Sbohem (good bye)
As Tilde approaches the end of her exchange, she reflects on what she'll miss the most.
“I’m going to miss all the people, it’s crazy how close you can become in such a short amount of time. I’m going to miss all the nights out that never end the way you plan, all the coffee dates and I’m going to miss Brno.
The nostalgia extends to the adventures with friends and the affordable Czech beers that became a cherished part of the experience.
Words for Future Exchange Students
In parting advice to aspiring exchange students, Tilde encourages embracing the initial days with a bit of extroversion, assuring that friends will follow naturally.
"It will be the time of your life," she says, emphasizing that the challenges, nerves, and anxiety are all worth the incredible journey. "Take a leap and do it!"
