AI Essentials: A Student Module

Welcome to University West's self-study course for students who want to learn more about generative AI!

The student course "AI Essentials: A Student Module" is designed to provide a basic introduction to artificial intelligence (AI) and how the technology can be used in your studies.

The course is divided into three parts:

• The first part covers the fundamentals and addresses what AI and generative AI are, how the technology works, and its limitations, such as bias, inaccuracies and so-called hallucinations. It also includes elements on data security, copyright and how AI is used within University West.
• The second part focuses on application and use. Here you will work with how AI can be used in practice, for example to formulate questions, search for information, read and evaluate content, and support your writing.
• The third part addresses learning, ethics and society. It examines how AI affects learning processes and what ethical and societal questions emerge, including environmental and social impacts.

The course is structured to take approximately 1–2 hours to complete and includes quizzes after each part to support your understanding. It is available in both Swedish and English.

After completing the course, you are expected to have a basic understanding of what AI is and how generative AI works, to be able to use AI more consciously in your studies, and to be able to reflect on reliability, ethics and responsibility in relation to AI.

The AI course may also be incorporated as a component within one of your programme courses, either as a voluntary element or as something you may be assessed on. If this is the case, you will need to complete the course again in Canvas.
