A possible solution to address this challenge is to insulate the engine's hot parts with protective coatings. The project's major aim is to develop protective coatings that provide high thermal efficiency and long-life time in diesel engines; this will be achieved by designing thermal spray coating with appropriate morphology, microstructure, and thickness as well as material composition.

New technical solutions to be approached are multilayer coating system as well as suspension plasma spraying which enables nano-crystalline layers with new morphology that gives enhanced functional properties.
The project will be coordinated by Univ. West and the industrial partners are Scania, Volvo Trucks and Volvo Cars who will both participate to coating development and will be the direct beneficiary of the project results.
