Distance learning

Distance learning requires you as a student to take on the responsibility of complying with the instructions, rules and deadlines set for your programme or course. You have to plan and manage your time to keep the study pace required to meet deadlines, to coordinate with your fellow students in the various course modules, and to keep meetings and examinations at set times.

How to apply

You apply to our distance programmes or courses the same way you apply for programmes or courses on campus, through www.universityadmissions.se. 

We offer four distance learning programmes and a small selection of courses.

If you are admitted to a distance course

Once you have accepted the admission offer, you must register for studies; otherwise you will lose your place. Find more information on our Before start of studies page.

We use the learning management system Canvas as a tool for communication between lecturers and students. Most communication and information is provided through this system or your student mail. In Canvas, you will find syllabi, compulsory modules, exams and study schedules as well as other useful information on your programme or course. When University West cooperates with other universities and when a programme or course is given together with other universities, a different tool may be used.

Examinations can be given either by home examination, written assignment, seminars in an e-classroom, or, in some cases, on campus or at a local study centre. Written assignments are handed in via Canvas, not by e-mail. Rules and schedules for examination are provided by your assigned lecturer.

How it works – studying distance education

Compulsory modules

Please note that there are modules tied to a certain date, for instance, supervision, compulsory online meetings or various examinations. There cab be courses which require you to attend one or more sessions on campus in Trollhättan while other courses are completely web-based.

Recorded lectures

As a distance student, part of your programme is delivered in recorded lectures via Canvas. If a programme or course is given in collaboration with another university, a different tool may be used. The recordings are usually generated in a studio on campus or from classroom lectures. Open Education Resources (OER) may also be used.

ZOOM

Zoom is a web-based conferencing system with full audio, video and screen sharing capabilities. When you connect to a ZOOM-meeting, you should use a headset to avoid audio feedback. If possible, set up and test your audio devices 15-20 minutes before the start of the meeting. SKYPE FOR BUSINESS

University West also offers meetings using Skype for Business. You can download the software to your computer or use the Skype for Business Web App to join a meeting.
