You can choose between applying for a 5 ECTS or 2.5 ECTS course in this subject. The difference is that in the 5 ECTS course the theory is applied in a project work.

Would you like be involved in developing the electric drivetrains for the vehicles of the future? Then this is a course for you!

The transition to an electric vehicle fleet entails an increased demand for competence in the field of electrical engineering. Engineers conversant with power electronics and electric drive systems will play a central role in society's transition to electric vehicles.

This course conveys a holistic perspective regarding electric drive systems, where students gain a conceptual knowledge of the different components, their properties, and how they affect the electric drive system.

**Course content **

This course is designed to deepen the students’ understanding of power electronics, especially in their role in electrical drivelines. Students will learn the basic components in electric drivelines with special focus on the inverter and its controls. To support that knowledge, students will study:

  • Semiconductor components – their basic operation and what differentiates their behaviors
  • DC/DC converters – understanding them allows inverters to be more easily understood
  • AC/DC rectifiers – a key component changing power system loading and necessary for large scale vehicle charging
  • DC/AC inverter – including their losses and harmonics and basic motor controls

Industry and academy

This course has been developed in collaboration with industry partners within the framework of one of our educational projects. The project aims to provide courses at advanced level to a mix of professionals and students to strengthen the Swedish industry's competitiveness.

We apply validation of work experience to see if you have knowledge that corresponds to the entry requirements for the course. Do not forget to attach your merits if you are applying based on work experience, the form is found here.

Examination

KRA601 is a 2.5 HP course. It has two different forms of examination. The first is written assignments. In this class there is a check-in assignment after each lecture consisting of problems similar to the example problems from class and simple questions to check understanding. The other examination form involves reflection on the class content and on power electronics in society; there is a seminar where the students explain one concept from the class and how it is used in your daily work or as they are used in society.
