A growing field for innovators

Do you have an innovative mindset? Get into the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the ground floor: AI is in the start-up phase of implementation in the industry. As a graduate of this programme, you will be a key player in introducing new ways to deploy AI in the industry.

Shaping the future

This programme combines learning in production technology and computer science. This allows you to build unique expertise in both AI and automation, entering the job market as an innovative engineer, where you will shape new production systems and products. This combination is unavailable from most other universities. We built this programme for electrical engineers, mechanical engineers and computer engineers to become production technology engineers with advanced skills in AI and automation. Your curriculum is designed to meet the demands of the industry. An added advantage of studying at University West is that you will also have easy access to the rich research environment at University West. You’ll gain practical experience through assignments as well as group and individual projects in close collaboration with corporate leaders in the industry. The entire programme has been built on the strength of a close collaboration between industry and University West. Every aspect is based on the real hiring needs of companies and research facilities in the industry.

Internationel environment

Students from around the globe come together to create a unique and international environment. Your programme is fully taught in English, and you will study together with students from Sweden as well as international students from countries in Asia, Europe, Africa and North and South America. Most of your instructors also have international experience in both research and education. This will enhance your cultural experience and English-language proficiency.

Work Integrated Learning

University West is Sweden’s leading university in work-integrated learning (WIL). We were tasked with the development of WIL by the Swedish government 15+ years ago and continue to lead the field today. This approach focuses on problem-based learning for industry and gives you access to real projects from partner companies and research centres. Your courses and instructors are based on the active research of Production Technology West (PTW), internationally recognised for work in production systems and processes in the manufacturing industry. We built your specialisation in AI and automation in close collaboration with corporate partners, who will provide you with insight and project work throughout your studies. Your training concludes with a master’s thesis you design and complete in collaboration with a company or within the PTW research group.

Advanced laboratories and access to expertis

As a production technology engineer with a specialisation in AI and automation, you will have access to our Production Technology Centre (PTC) during your studies. PTC is one of the largest and most updated manufacturing laboratories in Sweden. The PTC has been supporting the work of experts in production technology for over 15 years. This collaborative platform offers a unique collection of research technologies related to AI and automation:
• Flexible industrial automation • Agent-based automation • Smart process monitoring and process control
Ongoing research projects at PTC address intelligent agent-based automation for the manufacturing industry and smart process control of robotised 3D printing of metals.

With the development of the Internet of Things and the transition to Industry 4.0, many sectors now realise the importance and potential of AI and automation. AI and automation can support the increased need for flexible and highly automated production. Your studies are founded on the needs of leading companies operating in this sector. The industry needs engineers like you who understand:
• Flexible and sustainable automation • AI and machine learning • Sensor technologies • Distributed systems • Data mining and analysis
On graduation, you will be highly competitive for positions within the private sector or for further PhD studies. This degree qualifies you to hold positions such as:
• Automation engineer • PhD student in production technology • Systems engineer • Project manager for design and development of new automation solutions

Further education

This programme helps you build a strong foundation in the field and develop the qualifications you need to pursue your PhD in the broader fields of production technology. After graduation, you will be eligible to continue studying as a PhD student at University West or at other universities.
