Vision

“Primus is an internationally acknowledged and nationally leading research environment in production technology and work-integrated learning, contributing to industrial sustainable development and growth.”

Aims and objectives

Primus is a new research initiative at University West, and has been created in order to meet tomorrow’s complex societal and industry-related challenges for sustainable industry in Sweden. This is based on the university’s established research interests, which are also supported by three overarching national industrial needs:

• Facilitating the shift towards more sustainable, streamlined and improved manufacturing processes that allow for innovative concepts for new and existing products.
• Increased flexibility and greater integration of manufacturing processes into product and production development, supported by digitalisation and automation.
• Knowledge development within production organisations for a more knowledge-intensive Swedish industry, featuring faster implementation of research findings.

Operational management

Primus’s operational management is responsible for gathering information, preparing cases and presenting them to the Steering Group. The operational management team includes the Head of Programme, the Quality Coordinator, the Head of the Grants and Innovation Office, and administrative support.

The Steering Group is responsible for leading Primus’s development by drawing up strategies and business plans, and by monitoring and providing feedback. The Steering Group also discusses, develops and wins support for proposals for research and education activities at various quality assurance stages. The Steering Group consists of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Third-Cycle Programmes, the Programme Manager, the university’s heads of department, the core area managers and two student representatives.

Primus’s operational management is co-opted to the Steering Group. The Quality Manager and an appointed representative from the Research and Education Board are co-opted to Steering Group meetings addressing quality assurance issues.

Primus’s Strategic Reference Group provides input for external analysis and strategic long-term development. The group meets twice a year.

The Strategic Reference Group includes the Programme Manager, representatives from industry and the public sector, and the Vice-Chancellor of University West.
