Advanced Non-Destructive Testing & Evaluation
The research team is developing methods for non-destructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E). The technology enables the examination and quality assurance of materials and components in a precise manner without causing damage.
Non-destructive testing (NDT) is the detection of defects in components without destroying them. With the help of various techniques such as ultrasound, X-rays and eddy currents, it is possible to find cracks and other defects in metals and at the same time find out what type of defect it is, how big it is and where it is located.
Non-destructive testing is used as an evaluation tool (NDE) to detect, position, size and characterize service induced defects in the nuclear power industry and the aerospace industry where quality requirements are extremely high. Small cracks in metal can grow over time and have catastrophic consequences if, for example, they occur in the pipes of nuclear power plants or in the turbine blades of an aircraft engine.
