The course covers cutting processing from a production planing perspective. This means moving from a factory perspective down to the individual machining process. Knowledge from previous courses such as material science, mechanics and solid mechanic theory is used in production planing. The course is application-oriented in its structure with many examples from industry. The topics covered in the course are:
  • Machine tools structure and factory layout. The structure of motion axes, measurement systems and configurations that influence the choice of machine tools including purchasing aspects.
  • The material properties of the workpiece and the effect of machining on the material properties.
  • The chip formation process and mechanistic modeling of cutting forces and the behavior of the work material during machining.
  • Selection of cutting tools and their wear mechanisms linked to production economics.
  • Dynamic behaviour, limitations of cutting tool, workpiece and machine tool
  • Production planing methodology.
