Wayne Stephen Coetzee

Senior Lecturer

Dr I311

Staff member at Division of Urban Planning and Development. Conducts research in social sciences, political science, other social sciences, peace and conflict research.

I am a senior lecturer in Political Science and Co-Director of the Masters Programme in Work-Integrated Political Studies. My research interests are related to the political economy of security (broadly defined). I am particularly interested in the forces that shape the interconnections between public and private security, total defence collaborations, foreign and security policy, and "security branding" in international relations. I am currently co-authoring a book on Drone Warfare in Africa to be published by Springer Nature.

Over the past decade, I have also regularly engaged in public talks, published popular science articles, and provided media commentary on international affairs, ranging from topics such as the Ukraine-Russia War, US-China relations, emerging powers in the so-called "Global South", international law, and the security politics of environmental degradation.
My teaching and supervision profile includes, but is not limited to, postgraduate and undergraduate courses and topics in Global Political Economy, Security Studies, Foreign Policy Analysis, Development Studies, and Work-Integrated Political Studies. I hold a PhD in Peace and Development Research from the School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg, and an MA and BA in International Relations from the University of Stellenbosch.
