Wayne Stephen Coetzee

I am a Senior Lecturer in Political Science. My research sits at the intersection of security politics, political economy, and foreign policy. I examine how security is organised through relationships between states, markets, and so-called expert communities, with particular attention to public and private security, transnational defence collaboration, and the politics of the conventional arms trade. A recurring theme in my work is how security agendas travel across borders and sectors, and how they shape institutions, governance practices, and knowledge infrastructures.

My current work is supported by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) through a joint project with the University of Gothenburg on the role of business in societal security in Sweden and Finland. At University West, I also lead the Total Defence component in a Vinnova-funded Vertically Integrated Projects for Work-Integrated Learning (VIP4WIL) project.

Alongside my academic research, I regularly contribute to public debate through talks, popular science writing, and media commentary on international affairs, including the Ukraine-Russia war, US-China relations, global power shifts, international law, and the security politics of environmental degradation.

My teaching and supervision span undergraduate and postgraduate levels and include Global Political Economy, Security Studies, International Relations, and Work Integrated Political Studies. I hold a PhD in Peace and Development Research from the School of Global Studies at the University of Gothenburg.
