It is necessary to reduce the fuel consumption in aviation in order to reach the climate goals. This research project aims to develop lighter aircraft engines as part of this effort.
One way to reduce weight is to use lightweight metals. Another way is to produce smaller and lighter parts of the engines and put them together instead of casting big and heavy parts. This means that welding is used to a greater extent than before. In the aerospace industry quality demands are extremely high. The researchers at University West are developing new ways to automate laser welding and quality control of welds for aero engine parts. The work is done in collaboration with local engineering companies.
