Effectiveness of an mHealth intervention for overweight and obesity prevention in school-going youth
The dramatic increase in obesity documented in SA and many other countries creates a need to understand the behavioral, psychological, and environmental determinants of obesity in emerging economies and use that knowledge to design and test an m-Health intervention and hence decrease the prevalence of risk factors, reducing mortality and morbidity.
The study’s main objectives are:
- Build upon the literature review from the first collaboration and apply for international grant/funding.
- Examine the prevalence of overweight/obesity among SA adolescents by race, sex, school status, etc. and prevalence of risk factors (behavioural, psychological and environmental) among SA and Swedish adolescents
- Examine the association between overweight/obesity and risk factors
- Devise an m-health programme to provide support to change the health-related behaviour of overweight/obese adolescents
This proposal intends to use 3 workshops to achieve these objectives and develop a design prototype for an m-health intervention to address the proliferation of obesity among school-going youth.
