Barnombudsmannen/The Ombudsman for Children - guarding and voicing childrens’s rights and interests

The Ombudsman advocates for children and raises public awareness on children’s rights. They provide mechanisms for meaningful participation of children and youth in our work, including through interviews, focus groups, polls and meetings. Children are experts on their situation and the Ombudsman aim to amplify their voices. In this presentation, Elisabeth Dahlin gives her view of the state of art almost two years after the CRC was made a law in Sweden. What positive changes have been observed, and what gaps and challenges?

3) Adnan Abdul Ghani

Save the Children Sweden, Migration thematic expert
Member of EU Commission Expert Group on migration, asylum and integration

"Protection Beyond Reach": State of play of refugee and migrant children's rights in Europe

Adnan is a refugee from Syria and the initiator of the Support Group Network (SGN), a refugee led organization in Sweden. He is a thematic adviser for Region Västra Götaland for the regional development strategy 2020 to 2030 and a member of the EU Commission Expert Group on migration, asylum and integration.

It is six years to the day since Alan Kurdi lost his life just off the Turkish coast, becoming a tragic symbol of the “refugee crisis” as they call it. European lea-
ders were among the first to say: ‘Never again’, but ever since, they have only made routes more difficult and dangerous for refugees and migrants and the EU responded with increasingly restrictive and dangerous measures.

• What is the state of play of refugee and migrant children’s rights in Europe and what has happened since 2015?
• How about the migration key themes: protection at Europe’s outer borders; immigration detention; access to asylum and residency?

The Centre of Child and Youth Studies conference 2021, November 4th-5th: The Convention on the Rights of the Child

CYS at University West in Trollhättan, Sweden, organizes a yearly conference where researchers and practitioners meet. The theme this year is the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted in 1990. It has been ratified by 194 countries and gained status as a law in just under half of these - in Sweden since 2020. Through research as well as practice, this year’s conference aims to reflect the situation and challenges linked to childrens rights in different contexts and from different perspectives.

We invite researchers and active in public and non-profit organizations who meet and work with children and young people, directly or indirectly. The CYS conference has up until now been confined to a Swedish context. This year we are excited to open up and include an international track. In this track presentations and keynotes will be held in English. We are thus very happy to invite reserachers and practitioners from different countries to participate and to share research or work with/for children and young people. We hope to see you at the conference! You are also welcome to just listen and to participate in conversations with other researchers and practitioners.
